For those who love the atmosphere of a city restaurant or a traditional pub, our Retail Graduate Scheme can put you on the path to a managerial position. Don’t believe us? Then read on to hear what Retail Grad Liam has to say about his experience on the scheme.

The hospitality industry is becoming increasingly attractive to graduates. If you are self-motivated, have a business mind, enjoy what you do and have the willingness to work hard, the opportunities with Mitchells & Butlers are endless. For those who love the atmosphere of a city restaurant or a traditional pub, our Retail Graduate Scheme can put you on the path to a managerial position. Don’t believe us? Then read on to hear what Retail Grad Liam has to say about his experience on the scheme.

Fresh out of The University of Hull with a degree in Business and Management, Liam Siddall set his sights on gaining experience in hospitality and so applied for a place on our Retail Graduate Scheme. “The scheme gives you the perfect step up into the sector and provides you with the tools to progress quite quickly. Mitchells & Butlers are one of the largest operators and I knew that being part of a successful organisation, I would be taught all the managerial skills I would need to run one of their businesses.”

As part of the scheme, graduates are invited to attend events at our Head Office, the Retail Support Centre (RSC), in addition to receiving off job development opportunities. “The event days at the RSC provided a chance to network, meet other graduates and develop relationships with colleagues that are also working towards a role as a General Manager (GM).”

The programme is constantly being altered and developed so that grads receive the best possible training so that they are fully equipped to take on a GM role”, Liam explains.

After being successfully promoted to General Manager early on in the scheme, Liam then set himself the new and exciting challenge of progressing to a Retail Business Manager (RBM, or Area Manager), “I was excited to hear that there is an additional route that can be taken on the scheme in order to work towards becoming an RBM”, says Liam.

“I don’t believe that once you have been signed as a General Manager that the scheme has ended – there’s plenty more years of learning ahead and I look forward to testing my skills and knowledge further”, Liam continues.

Despite his achievements, Liam explains that future grads must be prepared for hard work and commitment if they want to achieve success on the scheme, “Be prepared to work and ensure that this is the right career path for you. You have the responsibility of running your own business, which is what I love, but this doesn’t come without its challenges. I had the opportunity to take on a site that wasn’t performing to its best standard and myself and the team managed to turn it around and make a difference - it made all the difficult times worthwhile!”
