Coastal life is calling you. Yes, you! Relocating for a job is one of life’s ultimate adventures. You don’t know who you are going to meet or what new sights you are going to see - and that’s all part of the fun. And what better place to relocate to than the coast? So English beaches may not have the best reputations. Pebbles often come in place of white sand, and the water might not be crystal clear. But there’s no denying that Britain’s coastal spots are some of the most beautiful landscapes our nation has to offer. So if you’re toying with the idea of relocating, here are five things that working on the coast allows you to do: Beach fun – lots of it! Now, you might not think of yourself as a beach person. But that’s what every beach-hater says until they’ve spent a great day at the beach. Trust us! On the other hand, perhaps you’re a beach bum who loves nothing more than the feeling of sand between your toes and the serene sound of waves crashing around you. If just reading this has got you feeling fintastic, then what else is there to think about? A new outdoor hobby You and your work friends have so many new hobbies to choose from. Surfing, fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking and cycling, to name a few. And, if you try your hand at a new hobby and it doesn’t work out, that just leaves you more time to enjoy a leisurely coastal walk or to work on your tan. A great night’s sleep This one might sound weird, so bear with us. A National Trust study found that a coastal walk can help you get a better night sleep. Their research showed that people who went for a stroll by the sea slept for 47 minutes longer, rather than the 12 minutes longer for people who strolled inland. And let’s not forget about all that extra Vitamin D – and vitamin sea - you’ll get. Show off your new home You’re not just moving to the coast to be closer to nature and breathe in that fresh seaside air, are you? You want to show your friends and family that you’re living in the world’s coolest place. So be ready for them to turn up on your doorstep and put on your tour guide shoes – you shore will have a lovely day. Enjoy the wonders of nature You might think that greenery is what you need to look for if you want tranquillity. But one study found that blue spaces beat green spaces in terms of lowering stress levels. Despite this, a whopping 83.65% of the UK population live in cities, and if you ask us, they don’t know what they’re missing out on. Now, doesn't that sound like cause for shell-ebration! It’s no secret that it’s been a tough year for hospitality, we’ve closed and reopened more times than we can count, we haven’t been able to welcome our guests who we were so used to seeing day in, day out and even more sadly, we’ve seen some amazing bars and restaurants close their doors for the last time for reasons beyond their control. But there is light at the end of the tunnel! Cast your mind back; back to a time before all the disruption, when hospitality was thriving and when people would flock to pubs, bars and restaurants just to have a good time! There are SO many reasons why we love working in pubs, bars and restaurants – maybe now that a sense of normality is finally creeping back in, you’ll see them too… Fun (most of the time at least…) It’s just a fact of working life that in any job some days are less fun than others. That said we’d bet that we have a lot of more fun days than everyone else. How can you not when you’re working with your mates every day just helping others have a good old time? The people who work in our businesses know the importance of having a laugh and making someone else’s day which is why they’re so good at it. Yes, there’ll be the odd occasion when it feels like the day will never end but on so many more days, you’ll find yourself going home with a big smile on your face. Fast-paced Time flies by when you’re busy (and having fun!). You might be doing similar tasks, but no two days are the same. Every guest is different, and you’ll be cooking up a variety of dishes, serving guests celebrating various occasions, and always learning something new. Before you’ve even realised it, your shift is done and it’s time to go home. Vibrancy The buzz, the music and the laughter from across the bar from a range of guests that are having the time of their lives, just happy to be with friends and family. We Brits love the pub because of the atmosphere you find inside and that’s the same no matter what side of the bar you’re on. Joining in on the celebration It’s just a fact, happiness is infectious. So it follows, that spending so much time around people who are celebrating something special with their nearest and dearest is a sure fire way to turn a bad day around. The beauty of our industry is that our days are filled with people sharing their good news so you never have to wait too long if your day needs a little boost of positivity. All about having a good time And even if people aren’t celebrating anything in particular, everyone is just there to take in the atmosphere and have a cracking evening – it’s impossible not to absorb some of that happiness for yourself. Meeting new people People from all walks of life will walk through that door on any given day – they could be guests, or they could be your new colleagues, but every person comes with their own story. It’s cliché to say that your teammates are like family, but when you spend so much time together and go through the ups and downs of the busy shifts, you realise they’re a support network that you wouldn’t find in any other job. Every Day is different Another cliché (sorry…) but they exist for a reason! Every day will present you with new challenges, new faces and a new reason to laugh. It could be the locals sharing absurd stories over the bar, or perhaps a famous face walking in and ordering something that you just totally wouldn’t imagine them to have ordered. Ask any of our teams, and we’re sure they will tell you that a TV show could be filmed about the goings on of their business simply because anything can (and does!) happen on any given day!
