At Mitchells and Butlers, we’re celebrating the success of our apprenticeship programme during National Apprenticeship Week (NAW). From the 5th- 9th March, we are joining employers and apprentices from across England to celebrate the success of apprenticeships, whilst encouraging even more people to choose one of our apprenticeships as a pathway to a successful career.
Here’s exactly what our Apprenticeship Team have been up to so far and what they will be getting up to throughout the week. Leading up to National Apprenticeship Week, we were honoured to welcome Andrea Leadsom, Leader of the House of Commons, to Northampton to meet five of our apprentices, while also showcasing to her how we are embracing apprenticeships in our business. In addition to this, we launched ‘MABsterchef’, which was a fun competition for our apprentices to give them the opportunity to create and present their own main course dish to distinguished chef tutor, Gary Richmond.
On Tuesday 27th February, we brought all our apprentices together for a day of MABsterchef cook-offs and a winner was chosen from each of our divisions to go through to the final cook-off. The overall winner was selected as Jodie Reed from The Castle in Castleton! Jodie has won the opportunity to serve her winning dish at our annual awards ceremony, the PRIDE Awards, as well as a weekend trip away to the River Cottage Chefs School.
Kicking off NAW, we’re excited to be attending What Career Live! on the 2nd and 3rd March at the NEC Birmingham! This will be an opportunity for 15-19 year olds to come to our stand for advice, inspiration and job opportunities from our Apprenticeship Team. Rounding the week off, on Friday 9th, the Team will be holding an “apprenticeship hotline” for Mitchells and Butlers employees to call for advice, support or just to find out more about our apprenticeships.
Next up, our Apprenticeship Team will be visiting Parliament on Tuesday 6th March, along with a select few of our apprentices. “We are so grateful to be able to take some of our top apprentices to the House of Commons so that they can meet their MPs to discuss Mitchells and Butlers, as well as the hospitality industry in general. These apprentices have worked extremely hard towards their apprenticeship and they deserve this reward and recognition”, says Lauren Carroll, Mitchells and Butlers’ Vocational Learning Attraction Manager.
Lauren will also be passing on her advice and guidance on hospitality apprentices as she will be acting as a mentor at Fresh Careers Fair in London on the 8th March.
We will also be using National Apprenticeship Week as an opportunity to work alongside other leading hospitality companies such as Greene King, Marston’s, Great British Kitchen and KFC to promote hospitality apprenticeships by releasing a combined pledge of the number of opportunities we all will have available. “We hope that by teaming up with some key players in the hospitality industry we will highlight the incredible apprenticeship opportunities we have in this industry”, says Lauren.
In addition to all of this, we will also be supporting Lifetime Training’s campaign, #betterbecause which aims to highlight how apprenticeships positively impact the lives of apprentices and the business they are in. Throughout the week, the Mitchells and Butlers’ Apprenticeship Team will be out and about in our pubs and restaurants getting selfies of our apprentices and finding out why they are better because of their Mitchells and Butlers apprenticeship.
It’s been a successful year for our apprenticeship scheme as we saw 1,300 apprenticeships taken up in 2017 and we’re looking forward to using National Apprenticeship Week as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our talented apprentices. Hungry to find out more of what we are up to during NAW? Make sure you check out our Instagram page (@mabpeople) throughout the week, as Lauren will be taking over our account to show you behind the scenes photos and videos.
