The hospitality and tourism industry is the fourth largest industry in the UK, employing over 2 million people. From inventing breath-taking menus to creating unforgettable experiences for guests, making sure that we recruit the best and investing in young people is hugely important to Mitchells & Butlers. From our apprenticeship schemes through to our University graduate programme, we are dedicated to opening doors for young talent, providing a genuine alternative to academic study and a real path to a long-term career in hospitality.

But with so many opportunities available to young people, hospitality can often get overlooked. That’s why for the upcoming National Apprenticeship Shows, we’re teaming up with fellow pub and restaurant chains Greene King and Marston’s to make sure our message is heard by future talent, loud and clear. Collectively, we’re exhibiting as ‘Loving Hospitality’ highlighting the best in hospitality apprenticeships to young people and their influencers across the UK.

Speaking of the partnership, our Director of Learning and Talent Development Jan Smallbone spoke to us about why she believes it’s important to take this collective approach;

“The ‘Loving Hospitality’ collaboration is about making sure as representatives of the hospitality industry rather than individual brands, we both educate and inspire career advisors and young people about the benefits working in our industry can bring. We want to work together to showcase how an apprenticeship in hospitality is rewarding, flexible and can be the right first steps for so many young people looking to make their mark.

“Too often there can be preconceptions surrounding apprenticeships from those looking to support young people through the tricky twists and turns of future career choices. But with a hospitality apprenticeships, there’s  many opportunities for success! For example, through our hospitality management apprenticeships, there is the opportunity for apprentices to progress from apprentice to Assistant Manager in two and a half years!

“Breaking the stigma around hospitality apprenticeships is so important in tackling the skills shortages challenge facing the industry, as we aim to develop, train and champion the future leaders of hospitality. Our mix also means our talent can get exposure to different skills, then decide which role best suits their career aspirations. By joining forces with both Greene King and Marston’s, we are able to show the full range of opportunities an apprenticeship can bring to young people, the variety of roles they can progress into and the ground-breaking businesses they can be involved with.”

It’s been just over three months since the doors of our pubs, restaurants and bars closed and our teams hung up their chef whites and poured their last pints.  The moment our government announced that we could reopen, the M&B family got busy preparing our pubs and restaurants so we were ready to safely welcome our guests again. We spoke to Casey who works as waiting staff at one of our businesses to find out what her time away from the pub has been like and how she feels after her first week back to work. Here’s the inside scoop: What role do you do and how long have you been with M&B? For the last three years, I’ve worked for M&B as a Team Member at the Plough in Harrow, which is one of our Premium Country Pubs. The flexibility of this job has allowed me to gain some great experience in the hospitality industry whilst studying for my degree at university. What did you miss most while away from work?Just being productive, admittedly I fell into a bit of a rut during the lockdown and felt like I would accomplish nothing with my days, there are only so many zoom quizzes and Netflix series you can watch. Being back at work, back with my team and seeing the regulars has really helped me to mentally get out of that rut and get back to my old self.How did you feel coming back to work?At first, I was nervous and quite anxious at the idea of coming back to my restaurant job, but once I was made aware of the new procedures that have been put in place and I saw them in action I was instantly eased. M&B has been really supportive throughout the lockdown, sharing regular updates on what’s happening within the business and giving us all the information we need on new procedures to make the return to work as seamless as possible.What was the first order you took when your pub reopened? It was a table of two of our regulars who shared that they couldn’t wait to come back to see us. They ordered a Dirty Burger with added halloumi and 7oz Fillet Steak, medium with beef dripping sauce and a side of onion rings. Our regulars probably know the menu as well as we do and know how to put together a mouth-watering meal.What has it been like working in a pub since they reopened?I thought I would have forgotten how to do everything, having been away from my waiting job for such a long time, but once I stepped back into the pub everything came flooding back. It has been so nice to be reunited with the team and the transition has been much easier than I thought it would be. Every single guest has been lovely and really understanding which has made us even happier to be back. What has been changed in your pub post lockdown?There has been a lot to learn and get to grips with since we have reopened our Premium Country Pubs, but I’m grateful that these new measures are in place because it makes the pub feel like a safe place to work. The changes have been carefully planned so that you still get that warm and inviting pub feel and we have had lots of positive feedback from our guests which has been lovely!A couple of the main changes are…We ask all our guests to sanitise their hands when they arrive, and we explain the new safety measures to them.We do more detailed cleaning throughout the day for example, after each guest leaves we clean all table surfaces, table legs, chairs and chair legs before the next guests are seated.All our menus are now paper disposal ones, they are thrown away after our guests have used them.There is social distancing throughout the pub – our table layout has been changed to ensure our tables are at a safe social distance and there are social distancing signs around the pub to remind everybody of the new measures.How do you feel after your first week back and what’s been your favourite part?It’s really good to be back, the pub feels really safe and our guests are happy. It’s almost like there wasn’t a 3-month break (although my feet are adjusting more slowly to the new routine)! Being reunited with the team and welcoming our regulars back to the pub has easily been the best part of coming back to the work. We’ve kept in touch virtually as a team during the lockdown, but nothing beats seeing each other face to face.Find out more about #lifeatmabWe’re over the moon to have welcomed Casey back but the since the safety of our guests and staff is our number one priority we’re making sure that any changes made are in line with government guidelines. It’s the hard work of Casey and the rest of the team that has helped us provide a brilliant service for our guests, where everyone is safe, comfortable and reunited with their perfectly cooked 7oz Fillet Steak.   We all know as an apprentice with Mitchells & Butlers you receive 33% discount across every Mitchells & Butlers pub and restaurant. But did you also know that every year our teams across the UK take time out to #ApplaudAnApprentice who they think deserves to be put in the spotlight? This can be recognising everything from their attitude to their ideas and hard work. So, this #NationalApprenticeshipWeek we’re showcasing eight different apprentices who are being recognised by our teams.     1.    For always looking to learn, Stuart McPhillips, Toby CarveryStuart’s described as an absolute gem. His team says he is always there when he’s needed, takes feedback on board and turns everything into a positive. He helps anyone who enters the restaurant, whether it’s a guest or team member, you can always rely on Stuart’s smile greeting you. He's taken on the role as team trainer with gusto, a definite star of the future.   ️   2.    For rolling the sleeves up to get involved, Luke, Vintage Inns Luke joined The Lamb Inn on the kitchen apprenticeship scheme. Luke has gone from strength to strength in the past month, showing a tenacious attitude and getting stuck to every challenge! Luke’s team wants to recognise all of his hard work and they can't wait to see how far he goes!   ️1️1 3.    For having a drive to succeed, Lucy Anne Brennan, Toby CarveryLucy’s team decided to applaud Lucy after joining Toby Carvery Snaresbrook around two years ago as a team member and developing leaps and bounds, with fantastic personal drive and ambition.      4.    For always being there to lend a helping hand, Gareth Connell, All Bar OneAll Bar One Newcastle’s Kitchen Apprentice Gareth Connell is being applauded for always being eager and willing to learn. Gareth’s co-workers say he is a valuable member of their kitchen team, always helps when he’s needed and plays a vital role together with the rest of the kitchen team.   11 5.    For having a “can do” attitude, McKenzie Smith, Vintage InnsMcKenzie Smith gets great comments and feedback from her Lifetime Training coach. She has mastered starters and desserts and is now moving onto creating main dishes. She has a “can do” attitude and gets great feedback from her co-workers!    1 6 & 7. For seizing the moment for progression, Chelsie & Rebekka, HarvesterChelise and Rebekka work together in a Harvester restaurant and have been applauded for their pride and engagement in the restaurant! They are both progressing brilliantly as Chelsie has recently become an Assistant Manager, with Rebekka on her way to becoming a Shift Supervisor.        8.    For serving with pride, Zak Torak, Nicholson’sThe team at Nicholson’s Henry Addington say they feel privileged to have Zak as part of our kitchen team. He is professional, adaptable and always approaches his work with a smile. Zak has an extremely bright future, watch out for the name! So that’s eight rounds of applause for our eight apprentice stories, but there’s so many more happening across our pubs and restaurants.
