Here at Mitchells & Butlers, our Award Winning People Services provide best in class support for all HR Services, which include: hire to retire, payroll, expenses, management information, helpdesk, chat & self-service via our Support Hub, business support and HR & payroll systems, data & change. The service provides administration, support and advice to all managers and employees – retail management, corporate and hourly paid employees based in 1600 sites around the UK. We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a HR professional to join our Team as a Head of People Technology & Insights, to lead this team in an exciting new era of evolution and development.
As Head of People Technology & Insights, you will be a senior member of our People Services Management Team, reporting into our Director of People Services. In this challenging and varied role, you will be responsible for the delivery of a consumer grade digital employee and manager experience that matches our digital guest experience. You will develop and implement the people technology strategy roadmap, working in collaboration with all people teams, other functions and external suppliers, ensuring that all changes made improve the user experience and make people processes easier, quicker and simple.
Key objectives of the role include;
- Act as the senior product owner for all HR technology, influencing and guiding the People Teams approach to buying, implementing, and running all People Systems in the most efficient and effective way, helping HR to work in partnership with our Business Change and Technology (IT) teams and external suppliers.
- To oversee the management and strategic implementation of all people systems; managing the day-to-day operations of the people systems team, collaborating with HR and BC&T to enhance system capabilities.
- To deliver people analytics and insights that support the people and business strategy. Here you will work closely with the HR Leadership Team to identify requirements for new and improved data analytics and work with team and other functions to build a roadmap of continuous improvement and value-added insights.
- To ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and security of all HR-related data, while also managing system upgrades and maintaining data integrity.
- Lead change management in People Services, to ensure change and activity is prioritised around business needs and can be balanced against annual cyclical activities
- Lead a culture of continuous improvement for People Services, challenging the status quo and ensuring improvements are successfully embedded in the business.
- Lead on risk management for People Services, ensuring the risk register is reviewed and updated quarterly to help inform and prioritise actions to address agreed priorities.
- As part of the senior management team for People Services, deputise for Director of People Services when required.
This role will involve a mixture of office and home working, with our Head Office based in Birmingham City Centre.

What will I be doing?
- Senior level ownership and accountability for the overall experience and landscape for all people systems, with a combination of some being owned within your own team and some being owned in other people teams.
- Lead the People Data and Analytics Team, People Systems Team and Continuous Improvement Leads.
- Deliver all key information for HR Period Exec Reports.
- Provide Exec Papers and written updates on key proposals, changes, and issues.
- Lead strategic supplier relationships with regular meetings and governance.
- Oversee operations to ensure effective delivery of all annual, cyclical, and project-based activities across People Services teams. Working in collaboration with CoEs and other functions to plan and develop effective and commercial solutions.
- Oversee the strategy for all People related reporting and analytics – working with relevant teams and systems to drive continuous improvement, real time data and insights.
- Take a leading role as part of the People Services Management Team to support the achievement of People Services objectives and operations.
- Lead relationships with stakeholders to ensure broader strategy is understood and effective team working across end-to-end processes in HR.
- Ensure effective change and governance across HR and IT systems/processes.
- Ensure that M&B’s people data is maintained accurately and securely and in line with GDPR guidelines.
- Ensure that the M&B organisation structure is up-to-date and accurate in all People systems.
- Ensure that Managers and employees have clear guidance and support to use people systems and know where to get help when needed.
- Anticipate and stay ahead of relevant legislative changes – communicate practical consequences as appropriate to the business to facilitate smooth implementation.
- Deputise for the Director of People Services when required.
- Attend quarterly HR Leadership meetings.
What do I need?
- Ability to work confidently with operators at all levels, influencing senior stakeholders and challenging where necessary.
- Analytical – to be able to clarify business requirements and priorities and help translate into requirements for suppliers or Team – i.e. delivering insights.
- Knowledge of end-to-end people and pay processes and systems impacts/dependencies
- Relationship Management with internal stakeholders and external suppliers
- Technology, working with SaaS suppliers to leverage full benefits of the product
- Thorough knowledge of UK Data Protection legislation.
- Ability to prioritise conflicting demands.
- Awareness of developments in people data management and communications systems.
- Project Management to oversee and deliver changes effectively.
- Experienced in managing and developing people-focused teams.
- Familiar with working in a large/retail or hospitality environment.
- Strong customer service mindset
- Ability to understand complex issues and describe simply to be able to report and update senior stakeholders.
- Graduate degree and post-graduate qualification desirable
