Intro to SOCIAL BITE
Social Bite began as a small social business sandwich shop on Rose Street, Edinburgh in 2012, where soon after opening a young, homeless man named Pete, who has been selling the Big Issue outside plucked up the courage to ask for a job. He was welcomed with open arms and seeing the difference it made encouraged Social Bite to help others. They began offering jobs and free food to people affected by homelessness and overtime they expanded into a chain or sandwich shops, restaurants, and a catering business.
Each year they Social Bite give out over 140,000 items of food to those experiencing homelessness and food poverty, each week connecting around 550 vulnerable people with good food, support and opportunities.
Social Bites mission is to bring people together in a collaborative movement to end homelessness.
Homelessness has countless effect on an individual, as well as communities, social bite focuses on creating trusting relationships and real opportunities, so individuals can make a positive change.
By partnering with Social Bite on the Jobs First programme we are committing to breaking down barriers to entry, by supporting individuals who have faced homelessness into sustainable employment, allowing them to change their lives for the better – swapping a reality of poverty and exclusion for one of compassionate support and inclusion.
Everyone on the Jobs First scheme works alongside a support worker who is there to create a supportive relationship, allowing the employee to navigate and understand the challenges and pressures they are facing, by creating opportunities to reflect whilst knowing they have someone by their side that is not there to judge.
Social Bite believe in creating a society where no one should have to be homeless.
