From Chef to General Manager: Emma’s unstoppable M&B journey
What makes a company a great place to work? At M&B, we believe it’s a mix of things, like a culture where growth is encouraged and skills are developed.
And if you need proof, look no further than Emma’s story. Starting as a Chef and grabbing every promotion in her path, she’s now the proud General Manager of The Wheatsheaf Inn in Chester!
Emma’s journey shows that at M&B, there’s no one-size-fits-all career path. Whatever direction you want to go in, we’re here to help you get there.
When did you join M&B, and why?
“I joined in September 2016 as a Chef after returning to work from maternity leave. I was looking for a career with more progression, and at the time, my husband had already made the move to M&B.
It seemed like a perfect fit, especially since I wasn’t seeing much growth at my previous job.”
Did you always see yourself working in the kitchen?
“I loved being in the kitchen, but I quickly realized my passion was in management. I worked my way up to supervising and was encouraged to go for a Kitchen Manager role.
But when I realized that the hours didn’t quite suit my life, my RBM suggested a District Trainer (DT) role.
Eventually, I moved into an Assistant Manager (AM) role, where I trained and supported new managers, and from there, I worked closely with other General Managers (GMs) to prepare for my next step.”
What was next for you?
“After working with several GMs, I knew being a General Manager was the next step for me. I started taking on more responsibilities, including holding a big site just before the first Covid lockdown.
After reopening, I continued to hold sites and then applied for a GM position at a location I was passionate about. Three months later, I was signed off as the new GM!”
Did you find any challenges moving between back-of-house and front-of-house?
“Not at all! Having experience in both kitchens and front-of-house has given me a well-rounded perspective.
It also means I can manage the business from all angles, which is essential for any General Manager. Being guest-focused is key, and that’s the fun part of the role.”
Can you tell us more about your apprenticeship?
“I'm currently working on my Level 4 Hospitality and Retail Management apprenticeship. It has been challenging, especially with Covid delays, but it’s also been super rewarding. The modules tie in with my General Manager training, so it’s been a great way to level up my skills.”
Is there anyone who stands out for the support they’ve given you?
“Honestly, it’s hard to pick one person. Throughout my journey, I’ve had incredible support from so many people, from GMs to RBMs and Trading Partners.
The team spirit across M&B makes it such a great place to work, and I’ve had help at every stage of my journey toward becoming a General Manager.”
Do you have any advice for someone interested in rising the ranks at M&B?
“Take your time with each role and learn everything you can. There’s always more to know, and the support at M&B is amazing. If you don’t know something, there’s someone who will. So just ask! That’s how you grow, especially when aiming for a General Manager role.”
Who would be your dream celebrity to walk through the Wheatsheaf Inn’s door, and why?
Tom Hanks would be my dream guest! He’s so down-to-earth, and I love his films. I’d love to have a chat with him over a pint!
