Graduate scheme vs graduate job: What’s the difference?

Posting date: 09/10/2026

Finished university and staring at a job search, wondering what on earth the difference is between a graduate scheme and a graduate job?

You’re definitely not the only one.

Both can be great ways to kick-start your career, build your experience and get your foot firmly on the career ladder. But they’re not quite the same thing.

So, what is a graduate scheme, how is it different from a graduate job, and which one is right for you? Let’s break it down.

Graduate scheme vs graduate job: the quick answer

The biggest difference is structure.

A graduate scheme is usually a structured programme designed specifically for recent graduates. You’ll often move through different placements or teams, receive dedicated training and development, and have a clear plan for progressing into your first permanent role.

A graduate job, on the other hand, is usually a permanent role that you apply for directly. You’ll join a specific team, work in a defined position and develop your career through the experience you gain in that role.

Think of it like this:

Graduate scheme: “Let’s give you a tour of the business and help you figure out where you could thrive.”

Graduate job: “Here’s your role, your team and your desk. Let’s get stuck in.”

Neither is automatically better. It really comes down to how you want to start your career.

What is a graduate scheme?

A graduate scheme helps graduates develop the skills, knowledge and experience they need to progress in a particular career.

Rather than staying in one role from day one, you may complete several placements across a business. You’ll usually have access to additional training, development workshops and people who can support you along the way.

At M&B, for example, corporate graduate schemes combine placements, technical skills and development workshops. Graduates also complete a pub or restaurant placement, allowing them to understand the business from the ground up.

And there’s plenty of variety. M&B offers graduate schemes across areas including IT, Finance, Human Resources and Marketing, with undergraduate opportunities also available in Marketing and Property.

So, if you’re thinking, “I know the kind of career I want, but I’d love to try a few different things before settling into one role,” a graduate scheme could be right up your street.

What is a graduate job?

A graduate job is generally open to someone who has recently graduated or has limited professional experience.

Instead of rotating through different placements, you’ll normally join a particular team and take on the responsibilities of that role from the start.

For example, you might apply for a graduate marketing executive role and spend your time working within the marketing team, developing your skills through real projects and day-to-day experience.

That doesn’t mean there’s no training or career development. Far from it.

You can still have plenty of opportunities to learn, take on more responsibility, move into different roles and work your way up. The difference is that your development is usually centred around one role or function, rather than a formal programme of placements.

What’s the difference between a graduate scheme and a graduate job?

Here are the main things to consider:

1. Structure

  • Graduate scheme: Usually highly structured
  • Graduate job: Usually centred around one role

2. Placements

  • Graduate scheme: May include rotations across teams or functions
  • Graduate job: Usually one team or department

3. Training

  • Graduate scheme: Dedicated graduate training and development is common
  • Graduate job: Training tends to be role-specific

4. Duration

  • Graduate scheme: Often runs for a set period
  • Graduate job: Usually a permanent position

5. Career path

  • Graduate scheme: Often designed to lead into a first permanent role
  • Graduate job: You start in your permanent role

6. Experience

  • Graduate scheme: Broad exposure to a business
  • Graduate job: Deeper experience in one area

7. Support

  • Graduate scheme: Often includes dedicated graduate support
  • Graduate job: Support comes through your team and manager

Of course, every employer does things slightly differently, so it’s always worth checking what a particular programme or role actually offers.

What are the benefits of a graduate scheme?

A graduate scheme can give you:

  • Variety: Try different teams, placements and projects before specialising.
  • Real experience: Get involved in real business projects and build practical skills.
  • Structured development: Follow a clear development plan with training and workshops.
  • Support: Get guidance from a buddy, Line Manager and Placement Manager, plus coaching and mentoring.
  • A bigger picture: Understand how different teams and areas of the business work together.

At M&B, for example, Marketing graduates get experience across central marketing, marketing innovation and brand marketing, while Finance graduates can rotate through areas including Pricing, Financial Accounts, Property, Procurement and Guest Insight.

What are the benefits of a graduate job?

A graduate job can give you:

  • Early specialisation: Focus on the area you already know you want to pursue.
  • Hands-on experience: Get stuck into a role and learn by doing.
  • Consistency: Build your skills within one team and role.
  • Responsibility: Take ownership of your work from the start.
  • Career progression: Develop your experience and move into new roles over time.

Basically, if you’d rather explore before you specialise, a graduate scheme could be the way to go. If you already know what you want and want to get stuck in straight away, a graduate job might be a better fit.

How to choose between a graduate scheme and a graduate job

Still stuck? Ask yourself:

Do I know exactly what I want to do?
If yes, a graduate job could help you specialise sooner. If not, a graduate scheme gives you more room to explore.

Do I want variety or consistency?
Multiple placements can give you a broader experience, while a graduate job lets you focus on one role.

How much support do I want?
Look at the training, mentoring and development on offer, not just the job title.

Where could it take me?
Think beyond your first year. What skills will you build, and what could your next role look like?

There’s no single route into your career. The best choice is the one that gives you the chance to learn, get stuck in and keep moving forward.
