Front or Back of House? Find out which M&B role suits you best
Not sure whether a front of house or back of house role is right for you? Discover the differences, explore hospitality careers at M&B and find the role that matches your skills and personality.
One of the best things about working in hospitality is that there's no one-size-fits-all career.
Love chatting to guests and creating memorable experiences? You might feel right at home in a front of house role? You might feel right at home in a front of house role.
Prefer cooking up great food behind the scenes? A back of house career could be the perfect fit.
Still not sure? Let's find out.
You might love front of house if…
You get energy from meeting new people and making someone's day.
Front of house teams are the face of our pubs, bars and restaurants. They're the first to say hello, the last to say goodbye and the reason guests can't wait to come back.
A front of house role could be perfect if you:
- Enjoy talking to people
- Stay calm when things get busy
- Love working as part of a team
- Like every day to be different
- Enjoy solving problems and helping others
Some of our front of house roles include:
If you love creating brilliant experiences, front of house could be where your hospitality career begins.
Or maybe back of house is more your style…
If you're happiest with an apron on and a busy kitchen around you, back of house could be the place to thrive.
Our kitchen teams work together to prepare delicious food, keep service running smoothly and make every plate one to be proud of.
A back of house role could suit you if you:
- Love cooking or want to learn
- Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
- Like being organised
- Take pride in keeping standards high
- Want to develop practical skills every day
- Thrive as part of a close-knit team
Some of our back of house opportunities include:
No matter where you start, you'll have opportunities to learn, develop and progress.
Can you build a long-term hospitality career in either role?
Absolutely.
One of the best things about working at M&B is that career progression isn't limited to one path.
If you're front of house, you could progress from Team Member to Shift Supervisor, Assistant Manager and General Manager.
If you're back of house, your chef career path could look something like this:
Kitchen Assistant → Chef → Kitchen Team Leader → Sous Chef → Head Chef
Whichever path you start on, you don't have to stay there. We support team members in moving between Back of House and Front of House roles, giving you the training, support and opportunities to develop new skills and build a career that suits your ambitions.
Many of our leaders started in entry-level roles before growing their careers with us.
Starting your first hospitality job?
No experience? No problem.
Many of our team members join us straight from school, college or university, or simply because they're looking for a career change.
We'll give you the training, support and confidence you need to succeed, whether you're welcoming guests or preparing dishes in the kitchen.
If you've got a positive attitude and enjoy working with people, we'll help you build the rest.
So… which role sounds more like you?
- Front of House is all about creating memorable experiences. You'll spend your day welcoming guests, recommending food and drinks, working as part of a close-knit team and making every visit one to remember. If you enjoy variety, meeting new people and keeping busy, you'll feel right at home.
- Back of House is where the magic happens. You'll learn how to prepare great food, master new cooking techniques and work with your team to keep the kitchen running smoothly. It's ideal if you enjoy being hands-on, solving problems and taking pride in every dish you serve.
The good news? There isn't a wrong answer.
From front of house to back of house teams, at M&B, you'll become part of a business that's passionate about helping people grow. With great training, supportive teammates and real career progression, your first role could be the start of something much bigger.
