Are you heading off to university in September? Are you looking for a job for the summer holidays before you go? Do you want to keep working for some extra cash whilst you’re studying? Enter: M&B’s university transfer opportunities.

Many employers offer student transfers when their employees head off to different cities around the UK for their studies, but they won’t be as fun or as full as perks as ours are.

We spoke to Ben Hicks who is ambitious and has his bread buttered on both sides! Why? Because he gets to progress towards his career goals while earning a living that adds to his prospects. Ben is an M&B university transfer who works in an exciting and fast-paced environment where no two days are the same!

Ben sounds interesting, doesn’t he?

In this post, we get to know Ben a little better and we get the scoop from him about why a university transfer at M&B was a great decision. Grab a tea and get comfy for our Q&A with Ben.

Q: What is your current role at M&B (at home and uni)?

A: I’m a front of House (FOH) food runner and I also have a waiting job.

Q: Where are you based?

A: My hometown is Rugby, where I work at The Dun Cow, a Vintage Inns country pub. When I’m at uni I’m in Worcester, where I balance university life and waiting staff jobs at Miller & Carter

Q: How long have you worked for M&B?

A: 3.5 years.

Q: How many hours do you work for M&B per week?

A: 10-12 hours per week.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your waiting staff job?

A: I enjoy working in a team and with like-minded people. The M&B culture is like no other. We’re a team, a family, and we really have each other’s backs.

Q: Has your career progressed in this role?

A: At the moment I’m busy focusing on my studies and balancing my goals and prospects, so I haven’t considered moving up a step in my roles at M&B. I do, however, know that there is a wide range of training and development opportunities open to me should I want to progress!

Q: Did you have any background experience before starting at M&B?

A: No, this is my first job! I’ve been learning as I go and loving it.

Q: What made you decide to apply to M&B?

A: Both the Dun Cow in Rugby and Miller and Carter in Worcester are easy for me to get to if I’m at home or at uni, and as a bonus I already knew a few of the staff. It just sounded like a convenient job to land!

Q: What’s the best thing about working at M&B and our university transfer opportunities?

A: The best thing for me is that the hours are flexible, the pay is good, and I get to work with friends and diverse team members. The uni transfer scheme is very useful and really well organised!

Q: How did you find out about transferring to another business and how did you arrange it?

A: My friend at the Dun Cow mentioned it when she went to uni. So, I asked my boss if a transfer to Miller and Carter in Worcester was possible – and just like that, everything else was arranged for me!

Q: What would you say to someone thinking of working at M&B in a part-time job whilst at university?

A: I would definitely recommend it for its flexible hours (especially for uni dates) and the staff are friendly are welcoming, which makes the transition easy.

Q: What do you think about the M&B culture and way of working?

A: I think it's great, I really enjoy the strive for perfection at Miller and Carter in particular.

Explore our university transfer opportunities

Our chat with Ben is a fine example of how a university transfer at M&B is a great opportunity to take ownership of financial support while still having fun and still getting good grades at uni! The in-house university transfer also makes it easy for you to continue your work as you hop between home and varsity (no need to leave M&B for the summer). As we said, Ben has his bread buttered on both sides – but he might as well have the whole loaf!

Did you know that all M&B employees get 33% of their food bill? This is just one of many perks that you’ll enjoy when you work with us! So, what are you waiting for? Browse our summer jobs today – or sign up for job alerts and we’ll be in touch with new openings.
