How to kick off your career in hospitality marketing
If you're reading this, chances are you're already working in a marketing role, or you're keen to find out more about one. Whichever it is, you might want to think about what the hospitality industry could offer you. To help you put together a picture of what a hospitality marketing role might look like, we spoke to two people in our marketing team.
Ellie joined us back in 2020, bringing with her many years of experience leading hospitality marketing teams. As our Head of Brand Marketing, Ellie is responsible for the entire restaurant division at M&B, overseeing the strategies for each of our 13 brands and making sure they truly reflect their values.
Now, Ryan also joined us in 2020, but his time at M&B looks very different from Ellie's. Ryan joined our marketing graduate scheme, which was consisted of seven placements, 3 of which totaled a year worth of Assistant Marketing Management level holds . He got to try his hand at launching new offers, creating video ad campaigns and leading our Commonwealth Games 2022 portfolio-level social campaign. Having completed the scheme, Ryan is now working as the permanent Assistant Marketing Manager for Stonehouse Pizza & Carvery
But that's enough from us. Let's hear from Ellie and Ryan so you can kick off your career in hospitality marketing and figure out if M&B could be the place for you.
Why did you choose to bring your marketing career to the hospitality industry?
Ellie - I’ve always had a toe in hospitality, be it working behind a bar or through hospitality training and events. Nothing beats the buzz of this industry. It’s hard to describe, but I love working in a place that brings moments of joy, comfort, fun and friendship to its guests!
Ryan - I was led towards the industry due to having a real passion for eating and drinking out, plus I have prior experience working in/with the hospitality industry,. I knew the M&B graduate scheme would be a great pathway to work directly with the hospitality marketing team at some of the nation's most loved food and drink brands.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting a career in hospitality marketing?
Ellie -Make the effort to get out there and meet people. Having a network of contacts means there's always someone to give advice or support whenever you need it. There are so many different roles in hospitality, and you might be surprised to find how much you enjoy an area you didn't know existed. So keep your eyes open to what's new in the market.
Ryan - It’s exciting and fun, yet also challenging. If you’ve got a passion for the industry and a creative outlook, then it could be the right move for you!
What is one thing every person should know before taking this career route?
Ellie - It’s hard work, but so rewarding and fun, and you will make lifelong friends. I strongly believe you need to have a real passion for the product or brand you work on. If you love what you do, it will shine through, and what’s not to love about eating and drinking out!
Ryan - Every day is different, and you will need to spin a lot of plates (hospitality pun not intended). That said, every day is exciting. At M&B, you’ll meet a variety of stakeholders and work on large scale projects that will reach guests all over the country.
In three words, explain what your current role means to you
Ellie - Excitement, creativity and growth.
Ryan - Exciting, fast-paced and rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about working for M&B?
Ellie - The culture and the team at M&B play a huge part in my love of the job. I get to work with some of the best-known and loved hospitality brands in the UK which is a huge responsibility and privilege, but also, the constant learning curve allows me to grow and develop.
Ryan - Simply the people and lifestyle that the company offers.
There's something for everyone at M&B
