Why a HR apprenticeship was Lauren's best career move

Why a HR apprenticeship was Lauren's best career move

At Mitchells & Butlers, we are committed to developping our people and are proud to offer our employees the opportunities to be #ReachingNewHeights in their careers. One way to seize the opportunity is through our apprenticeships, designed for people of all ages and experience levels.

For employees like Lauren Carroll, these apprenticeships offer the support, time flexibility, and development needed to excel. Read on to hear why Lauren believes you're never too old for an apprenticeship.

How does a HR apprenticeship at M&B work?

Vocational Learning Attraction Manager, Lauren Carroll took on the opportunity to enrol onto the CIPD Level 5 HR Apprenticeships with Crosby Management Training. Lauren is always working to give young people the opportunity to shine, placing them in a whole host of apprenticeships across the UK, so she knew the time was right to work towards her own apprenticeship.

“I know the power of apprenticeships for those in entry level roles, but I’m also a massive advocate of apprenticeships for those further along their career journey. For me, I’ve been with Mitchells & Butlers for nearly three years and when the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to develop myself with the CIPD Level 5 HR Apprenticeship."

What are the benefits of a HR apprenticeship?

The CIPD Level 5 HR apprenticeship aims to further develop HR professionals who are passionate about people initiatives in larger organisations. Lauren shared how the program has broadened her HR knowledge and opened doors to new areas of the business.

“This apprenticeship gives me the opportunity to work towards a broad HR apprenticeship, having a behind-the-scenes view of areas of the business I had never previously seen. As a broad HR knowledge and the ability to influence senior team members are both key if you want a successful career journey, this apprenticeship has become one of the best career steps I've made."

How an apprenticeship can help you learn and put your best foot forward?

Lauren's undergraduate HR degree apprenticeship also offerend unique opportunities outside the office, as she put on her walking boots for a team-building trip to Snowdonia National Park. This experience allowed her to apply her HR learning in real-world settings and develop resilience, leadership and decision-making skills. Lauren gave us the rundown of why apprenticeships are perfect for those looking to step up their career game.

“The Snowdonia trip with Crosby Management Training was amazing and allowed me to put into practice some of the skills I’d learnt so far whilst learning some new ones, in a setting away from the office. I was with a group of fantastic people and I would definitely recommend for anybody to take up the opportunity for an away day as part of their apprenticeship. With no mobile phones and just each other, it was great to share experiences and stories with one another whilst also being outside.

I took some valuable lessons away from the trip. I really saw my leadership skills develop when I was leading our team to staying afloat on the rafts. Also, when we needed to work as a team to successfully navigate or during gorge-scrambling, that was a really rewarding moment."

Looking ahead to a bright career with M&B

When we asked Lauren what she was most excited about, she told us that she can't wait to take what she's learnt and put it into practice.

“I’m looking forward to taking these experiences with me and working towards finishing my apprenticeship by next Summer.”
