Working in the Lake District

Working in the Lake District

Imagine working in the heart of the Lake District, a location where on the doorstep of your ‘office’ are the rugged fell mountains, and glacial ribbon lakes that make up England’s largest National Park. Where you get to breathe in that fresh air and where your commute to work takes you through the winding hills. Sounds idyllic right? Well, that’s exactly what you can get with a job at Mitchells and Butlers (M&B) at one of our many locations tucked away in the more peaceful and tranquil spots across the UK.

In fact, that’s one of Matt Smith’s favourite things about working at The White Lion Hotel Ambleside. As a General Manager at one of our charming Ember Inns pubs, with attached Inn Keepers Collection Hotel, Matt welcomes guests who are visiting from across the world.

Read on to hear why Matt loves working in the Lake District, and why it could be the perfect spot to take your career:

1) Why did you join the company and how long have you been with M&B?

I joined M&B to try something new 13 years ago. I took a job as a Team Member, I then started a management training program where I worked my way up to an Assistant Manager, and then on to become a General Manager of my own pub. I’ve worked at various locations across the North West before moving to the White Lion three years ago. Although it was not my intention to stay long term, I very quickly fell in love with the pub and the way of life in the Lakes and now have a house here.

2) What is the best thing about working in a beautiful rural area?

One of the best advantages of being in the Lakes is the endless picturesque walks and hikes to explore. There are endless attractions to visit. I even found myself entering the Lake District Marathon this year!

3) What does an average day at work look like for you?

My average day will either be behind the bar, or hosting tables, always making our guests visits memorable. We get huge amounts of international tourism and I love getting to meet people from all corners of the globe. I also enjoy educating our visitors on the cask ales we offer and sharing my knowledge on local products.

4) What do you love most about your job?

The vast and varied amount of people you get to meet being in such a popular tourist destination, no two days are the same.

5) How do you spend your time when you're not at work?

When I’m not working I like to throw on my hiking boots and go off and explore. In three years I’m still working my way through all of the Lakes - normally finding a nice pub or two along the way.

6) Why would you recommend a job at M&B in the Lake District?

Working in the Lakes is a different way of life, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I feel like I’m on holiday all the time. The majority of the people who live in Ambleside had originally moved here for work and loved it so much they decided to stay. M&B also have great training programmes in place, so there are opportunities for everybody, and I love to see people develop. Whether you want to join us for the summer, or you want a career, joining M&B could be the start of your next chapter (and I might be biased, but I’d recommend starting in the Lake District!).

Are you ready to take your career to the country?

So, do you like the sound of working in one of our charming country locations? At Mitchells and Butlers, we have over 1,600 pubs, bars and restaurants scattered across the UK, meaning your local M&B business is closer than you might think.
