Kiran shares his story of working in hospitality with autism
At Mitchells and Butlers (M&B) we provide opportunities for anyone who is willing to work hard, have fun, and show their passion. Embracing the unique qualities of all our team members is what makes the M&B family so strong.
Kiran joined M&B 3 months ago as a Front of House team member and has already made a real impact on both his team and his guests. Kiran has Autism, which can present him with challenges however, this hasn’t held Kiran back. With the support of Alice his General Manger and the rest of his team, Kiran has grown in confidence in his role and is now flourishing. We spoke to them both to find out how Kiran’s uniqueness makes him such a valued member of their team and to get an honest insight into some of the challenges they have faced and conquered along the way.
Meet Kiran, Front of House Team Member
Why did you choose to work at M&B?
I have dined in a few M&B’s myself, so thought it would be a nice to work in one.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Serving customers and earning tips.
Do you think M&B is a good place for people with Autism to work?
Yes, they are very open and inclusive.
How do your team and managers support you in your job?
By showing me the ropes and checking in to make sure I am ok.
Would you recommend a job at M&B to someone who also has Autism?
100%. I am very grateful to have been offered this role.
Meet Alice, General Manager
How have you adapted your management style to meet Kiran’s needs?
I have learnt that Kiran works well with clear and structured information, therefore when anything is new, I make sure that this is the approach I take. I take my time to make sure that I let him know what we are going to do and make sure that if he is unsure on something he can ask. I have also found that Kiran likes to be shown things the first time around, so I made sure that this has been introduced.
What steps have you taken to learn more about Kiran’s learning needs and how to support him?
Our central HR team sent me a useful link to a website on employing a team member with Autism that outlined what Autism is and what to expect. The website also gave me tips on how I can adapt my management style to suit Kiran.
We also have a long-term team member whose Grandson is Autistic, so on occasion I have spoken to her and she has made suggestions on how I can be supporting Kiran.
As a manager, what have you learnt from having Kiran as a team member?
I have learnt so much from Kiran, he has helped me develop my approach and management style. I learnt to be patient and understanding of different needs.
What makes Kiran such an amazing addition to your team and the M&B family?
Kiran is an amazing addition to The Boot, he is very keen to learn and has a fantastic attitude. Kiran always makes sure his teammates are happy. His smile and positive mindset makes you want to smile too. It’s a joy to have Kiran as part of my team.
