MEET JEAN: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS AT M&B!
Do you remember when Mitchells & Butlers was known as Bass PLC and a pint would cost you no more than 17p? Well, there is one person who does and that is long standing Team Member at the Horseshoe Bar in Glasgow Jean, who this month, will be celebrating her 50-year anniversary working for us!
Currently working as a team member at this iconic pub, Jean has been a loyal and hard working member of the M&B family, seeing the company grow from a just a brewery to one of the largest restaurant and pub organisations in the UK.
Congratulations on your service award – 50 years, how has M&B changed over that time as an employer?
Over the time that I have worked for M&B technology is definitely the biggest change, computerised tills making life easier. Believe it or not in the past the Manager would ring all sales up for the staff sitting behind the bar and giving you the change to give back to the customer!
And not to forget the price of a pint! In the 80’s it was £1.50 for a 3 course meal, and a pint of Lager was 16p and heavy 17p!
Over 50 years I have worked with over 1000 different people within the Horseshoe, that’s a lot of different faces!
What has kept you loyal and working for M&B throughout this time and your various life stages?
It’s always been a great pub company and it has not changed much over the years. I have worked with a number of different managers, all with different styles of management one who himself served at the pub for 42 years . I have also worked with a number of team members here who still work here with over 25yrs service.
What has been your own career highlights?
- The people I work with!
- The professionalism of the way the business runs.
- Serving some amazing guests including Oliver Reed.
- And most of all being blessed with good health!
What do you value most about your time with M&B?
It must be the opportunity to last 50yrs in The Horseshoe! On my first shift I was simply stepping in to cover my Aunt who was off sick for 2 weeks and 50 years later I am still here!
What is your advice for a successful career?
My advice for those wanting a successful career in hospitality is to be a team player and to always listen to people.
