Summer jobs that work around you: Sam’s story from the kitchen
Looking for a summer job that fits around your life, helps you earn some extra cash, and gives you real experience in a buzzing environment? Whether you're a university student, a gap year traveller, or just someone who wants to make the most of the summer months, a summer role in hospitality could be exactly what you’re after.
Just ask Sam, who’s been returning to Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) every summer for years, and loving it.
From Ember Inns to adventures abroad
Sam first joined M&B back in 2004 as a chef at Ember Inns. But his story isn’t your typical 9-to-5. For most of the year, Sam works abroad. Yet every summer, like clockwork, he returns to the UK and the kitchen.
Why? Because a seasonal job in hospitality gives him the flexibility he needs, the income he wants, and the familiar faces he enjoys working with.
“It suited my plan to return abroad after the summer,” Sam says. “It was also a great opportunity to earn some extra money.”
Why a summer job at M&B hits different
For Sam, the benefits of a summer kitchen job go beyond the wage. Working in a pub or restaurant during the summer means:
- Flexible hours that fit around your plans
- Walkable locations close to home
- A fun, fast-paced environment where no two days are the same
- Real friendships for life
“I built great relationships with the general manager, which opened the door to return regularly during the summer,” Sam explains.
“I also made some great friends, including one chef who’s now a Kitchen Manager at another M&B business.”
A job that grows with you
One of the best parts about working with M&B is that it’s not just a job; it can be the start of a career. Many of our team members, like Sam’s friend, have gone from summer staff to management roles. Whether you’re looking for a part-time job or a long-term career in hospitality, there’s room to grow.
And if you’re just looking for a summer gig? That’s great too. We welcome people who want to work for a season, support the team, and enjoy the experience.
So, would Sam recommend it? Absolutely.
“It’s an opportunity to earn some money in a flexible environment,” he says. “And it’s a great way to support the team while others are taking time off during the summer.”
