From your first shift to leadership: why hospitality is a career, not just a job
Your first hospitality job might begin as a way to earn some extra money, work around university or find something that fits alongside the rest of your life. With a few shifts under your belt, however, you might start to see it differently.
Hospitality is full of opportunities to learn on the job and discover what you’re good at. And if you decide you want to take things further, there are plenty of directions your career could go at M&B.
So, from your first shift to your first leadership role, what can a career in hospitality really look like?
Why is hospitality a career, not just a job?
Hospitality is one of those careers where you learn by getting stuck in.
On a busy shift, you’re talking to guests, working side by side with your team, juggling priorities and sorting out problems as they happen. You learn to keep your cool when things get busy and notice when somebody else needs a hand.
Before long, you’re building skills that can take you much further than your first role.
Communication, teamwork, organisation and problem-solving all matter in hospitality. As your confidence grows, you might find yourself helping a new Team Member settle in or becoming the person others turn to when they need support.
These are all transferable hospitality skills that can serve you well wherever your working life takes you.
Even better, if you discover that hospitality is where you want to build your future, that first job could be the beginning of a career you never expected.
What does hospitality career progression look like at M&B?
There’s no one-size-fits-all career path at M&B.
If you love being around people and creating memorable experiences for guests, you might start in one of our bar and waiting roles. As you learn the ropes, you can take on more responsibility and start building your leadership skills.
Prefer the buzz of a busy kitchen? You might start as a Kitchen Assistant or Chef and work your way towards leading a kitchen team.
But careers don’t always follow a neat line, and that’s part of the fun.
You might move between front-of-house and back-of-house roles, experience another M&B brand or spot an opportunity you hadn’t even considered when you first joined.
Where you start doesn’t have to determine where you finish.
How can your first hospitality job prepare you for leadership?
You don’t need the word ‘manager’ in your job title to start showing leadership.
It often begins with the little things you do on shift, such as helping somebody new find their feet or stepping in when a teammate needs support.
Those are the moments that help you become someone other people can rely on.
As you gain experience, you’ll also start to understand what makes the whole business tick. You’ll see what goes into a great guest experience and what it takes to keep service running smoothly when the pace picks up.
A Shift Supervisor role can be a great first step into leadership, giving you more responsibility while keeping you right at the heart of the action.
From there, an Assistant Manager or Deputy Manager role gives you the opportunity to lead by example and help pull everything together so guests leave happy.
Want to keep going? You could eventually step into a General Manager role, leading your team and creating something you can be proud of.
Can an M&B apprenticeship help you build your career?
An M&B apprenticeship gives you another way to learn, earn and build your hospitality career at the same time.
Whether you’ve just finished school or you’re looking to retrain, you’ll get hands-on experience while working towards a qualification and developing skills you can use throughout your career.
There are apprenticeship opportunities across chef, bar and waiting roles, so you can find a route that suits you, whether you feel more at home chatting to guests or getting stuck into life in the kitchen.
And because you’re learning in a real hospitality environment, you can put what you’re learning into practice straight away.
Where else can a hospitality career take you?
One of the best things about hospitality is that your next opportunity isn’t always the one you expect.
Read Jason’s hospitality career journey, and you’ll see what can happen when you keep learning and stay open to where your experience could lead.
He started as a Kitchen Assistant before progressing to Chef and eventually becoming a Head Chef. His career then took another turn when he joined the Openings Team as a Kitchen Investment Trainer, helping to support new pub and restaurant openings across M&B.
There isn’t one ‘right’ route through hospitality. Sometimes the role you start in simply opens the door to the next one.
Why build your hospitality career at M&B?
