home and away, the job that's here to stay

home and away, the job that's here to stay

It’s that time of year again, University students are going back, freshers is in full swing, and so many students are moving across the country! We know that having a pub job at Uni is the best Uni job about, so we make it as easy as possible for our team members to transfer to different businesses whilst completing their studies. We caught up with Hala to find out how transferring with M&B helped her settle in her new life in Manchester.

1. When did you join M&B?

I joined M&B in March 2019 because I wanted to be more involved in the local community near where I lived. I’ve always loved having a chat with the locals in the area, so I knew the local pub would be a great fit for me! I also wanted to join a company that would help me to develop some transferable skills, and progress in a role.

2. What business did you start at and what location did you move to?

I started at The Grange in Sunderland and moved to The Piccadilly Tavern in Manchester in September 2020, when I went back to university to study for my MA in History.

3. How did you find it transferring to a different business?

Knowing certain skills like how to use tills, measurements, perfect serves, and knowing the products on offer (although slightly different between the two places) made my life a lot easier! I was also a lot more confident in my new job because I'd had that time and experience in The Grange. My two managers were great at helping me transfer and I was really welcomed into my new role in Manchester. I enjoyed a change in atmosphere between the two brands, and it was really nice to get to know a new part of town and different people who I'd never have normally met. It really helped me to settle in well to my life in Manchester.

4. How did being able to transfer make you feel?

Relieved, it really provided a sense of stability. There are always money worries when you're a student and potentially being unemployed when I first moved was a concern for me, but once I found out I could transfer with the company it took a lot of stress out of move. It was great to be able to enjoy moving and going out in my first few weeks in Manchester without having to worry about money. Also, when university ended, I was able to transfer back to The Grange, which alleviated any post Uni worries too! I loved returning to The Grange and all my friends there.

5. What do you enjoy most about your job at M&B?

Easily, the best thing about working in a pub is the people, no matter how cliché it sounds! The teams are great, and I've legitimately made friends for life. I love our regulars too, they keep the job interesting and lively. I also love a fast-paced match day; there's nothing better than battling for the Carling tap whilst the pub is bustling and there are some good tunes on - especially since the Covid rules have been relaxed and we can get a bar full of people again!

6. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Away from work, I enjoy going on day trips to see exhibitions, friends, and visit new places. I'm a bit of a foodie too so I love going for a nice meal. I also love walking my dog down the beach, listening to some music, and picking up an iced coffee.

7. What would you say to someone considering a pub job whilst studying?

I'd really recommend it. It's a great way to become more involved with the local community when you move away and to meet people who you never normally would. It can be flexible and rewarding, too. There can be late nights but it's nothing you wouldn't already be used to! I would really recommend M&B too because they really have every little corner covered in terms of coming up with solutions to help you work easier and faster and feel supported, and the perks are great too!

If freshers has taken its toll, you might want to think about moving from one side of the bar to the other! We can offer you a flexible way to earn some cash, and a job that allows you to move between University and home. Did you know that 80% of the UK population live within 5 miles of an M&B pub?
