Here’s why a pub job is actually the best uni job about
We all know going to university is expensive! Students are faced with mastering the art of balancing studying, working and socialising, resulting in finding a part time job that works around them. We’re here to tell you that working in a pub at uni is seriously underrated. It’s more flexible than retail, more sociable than tutoring, and a lot warmer than flyering. But you don’t have to take our word for it! Our student team members have shared 8 reasons why having a pub job, really is the best uni job about.
1. We get to meet some veeeeery interesting customers
We know it’s cliché, but no two days are the same. Our guests are from far and wide, so we get to hear some veeery interesting stories. And, nothing makes a shift go faster than recognising some friendly faces and having some banter with the people you’re serving.
2. Even small tips can add up and become a fortune
Every little helps when you’re a student. Getting a little extra cash on top of what we’re already earning is a pretty sweet deal.
3. The flexible hours are ideal for us to fit in alongside uni
Working in a pub is one of the most flexible jobs you can have – it’s really easy to fit shifts in around our lives so we can just make money whenever we’ve got some spare time.
Essay deadline? No problem, switch with a colleague. Waiting for all your mates to finish exams? Pick up some extra shifts and earn some cash instead of sitting at home watching old episodes of Love Island.
4. The regulars are pretty jokes
Every pub has its own unique set of regulars, and it’s always good to see a familiar, friendly face on our shift. Plus, they’re always keen to share some scandalous gossip to keep us entertained.
5. The food discounts literally give us life
Not many people can afford to buy their lunch from Pret every day, but we’d much prefer a quality pub lunch over a sandwich any day, especially when our discount makes it a great price and it’s twice as big. Plus, being able to treat our friends to a cut-price feast makes us very popular. We get 50% off on shift, and 33% off when eating out with friends too!
6. It’s like working with a big bunch of mates
Most of us are students, and we spend so much time together that it’s impossible not to bond. Plus, so many funny things happen on shift that it really helps everyone make friends quickly. It’s actually fun to go to work when everyone is on good form – it’s just like working with a big bunch of mates.
7. The staff nights out are amazing
One massive benefit of working in a pub is that it’s literally a place made for socialising. What’s not to love about winding down with your pals after a long shift?
8. It’s top for learning those transferrable skills
What other job teaches you time management, teamwork, multitasking, diplomacy, money management, and how to pull a perfect pint? Not to mention the fact that knowing how to make all the cocktails on the All Bar One menu is a real crowd-pleaser when it comes to parties or pres. Let’s face it, pub work teaches you so many transferrable skills, it's CV and social gold.
